Fortified Region – Underground Tourist Routes

The fortifications of Międzyrzecz Fortified Region, built by the Germans in the 1930s, are one of the most powerful systems of this type in Europe. Along about 100 km you will find various types of fortifications and water obstacles – concrete dams, canals with a system of locks, culverts, drawbridges and roller bridges and bunkers with armoured domes connected by underground tunnels up to 40 m deep and over 30 km long. The Maginot Line was built in France’s fear of the German State, the Międzyrzecz Fortified Region as a system of protection in case of an attack on Germany by the Polish army, which was in alliance with France. Unlike the French line, the fortifications of Międzyrzecz Fortified Region were captured "without a single shot.” This priceless monument of 20th century fortifications can be visited in two places, the Museum of Fortifications and Bats in Pniewo and the Boryszyn Loop.
